Where can I travel without quarantine? Countries left with minimum restrictions for mid-term vacations

The options may be limited, but a week abroad at the end of October is not totally excluded.

These family destinations are all still partially open to UK visitors.

Alicia miller explains how, where and when.

Destinations with minimal restrictions

Temperatures (and flights) are dropping, but Greece is far from closed – and it’s now the only major vacation destination where you won’t have to quarantine both ways.

Scotland’s advice is now aligned with that of the rest of the UK, meaning residents no longer have to self-quarantine when they return home.

Mykonos is the notable exception – the island has been removed from the UK government’s list of air corridors and remains banned. All travelers to Greece must complete an online passenger locator form at least 24 hours prior to arrival (travel.gov.gr).

The government will reinstate the southernmost of the Greek islands on its quarantine exemption list from 4 a.m. on Sunday, October 18. The largest of the islands, birthplace of the mythical Zeus, enjoys mild temperatures in October, although the evenings can be chilly.

Opt for its beautiful beaches, archaeological treasures and mountain hikes, as well as its own proud and distinct cuisine.

With its calm, turquoise waters and generous beaches, Corfu is postcard Greece (and the homeland of Durells).

It won’t pack the Rhodes heat, but the sea is still warm enough for swimming – try soft-sand Glyfada – and you can spend cooler days strolling around Corfu’s World Heritage-listed Old Town. ‘Unesco.

No need to aim for the islands for pin-up beaches – this northern part of the mainland has its fair share of sandy-fringed peninsulas and sheltered waters.

However, the temperatures will drop, so choose a resort with plenty of activities.

Stockholm is a top-notch city break – spend a long weekend visiting a Viking ship (the Vasa), visiting the Skansen open-air museum, and making time for the fika (probably a coffee and a bun with cinnamon).

Gothenburg is ideal for a longer stay: explore the rainbow-painted city, then head to the nearby archipelago to kayak along the forested islands.

Mainland Portugal may be off the menu, but lush Madeira is quarantine in either direction.

You will need a negative PCR test 72 hours before travel, or a free test on arrival.

3-level rulers

If you live in a “very high risk” (or level three) area under the government’s new program, you should not travel outside of the area in which you live.

You are allowed to travel if you have already booked a vacation, but you should only do so with your own household.

People living in “central belt areas” should carefully consider the need to travel outside of their local health board area.

Residents of areas without local restrictions in place may travel to areas without local restrictions, including going on vacation.

Residents of very high risk areas of England cannot enter Wales.

North Ireland

No unnecessary travel should be undertaken.

The Caribbean

Several islands allow entry to UK visitors who have obtained a negative PCR test before travel. However, you’ll often need a second test when you arrive, so you’re playing around with the possibility of quarantine (at a government facility) if you’ve recently contracted Covid.

TUI, Virgin Holidays and British Airways sell packages; carefully check the booking conditions.

Those to watch

Balearic Islands and Canaries (Spain)

Although it is not possible to book at the moment, an air corridor between the UK and the Balearic and Canary Islands is possible.

If exempt from quarantine on return, you will likely be required to present a negative PCR test result before entering, and again 48 hours before leaving the islands.

If your test is positive, it is likely that you will not be allowed on your return flight and will have to quarantine yourself at the expense of the local authority.
